Jeremy Page

Jeremy Page was born in Folkestone in 1958. He has lived in France and Italy, and spent many years in London before moving to East Sussex. He now lives in Lewes and teaches at the University of Sussex.

His poems have appeared frequently in magazines and anthologies and he has published two pamphlet collections, Bliss (Crabflower Pamphlets, 1989) and Secret Dormitories (Crabflower Pamphlets, 1993) and one full collection The Alternative Version (The Frogmore Press, 2001). He is a featured poet alongside Robert Etty, Giles Goodland, Sophie Hannah, W H Petty and others in Kate Pemberton's anthology The Silent Key (1997).

He has read at numerous venues including Lauderdale House (with Judith Kazantzis and John Weston), 106 Piccadilly (with Marita Over and Michael Swan), the Troubadour (with James Brockway and Myra Schneider) and Folkestone Library (with Peter Reading).

Comments on The Alternative Version include:

'The autobiographical dispatches that litter Jeremy Page's collection, The Alternative Version, shine and shimmer with insight and entertainment.'

Will Daunt, Envoi 134

'The title poem is a wry reflection on the might-have-been and I like it a lot.'

Tony Grist, iota 59

'(The Alternative Version) is full of decency and holds to some genuine values of honesty and compassion.'

Jim Burns, Ambit 169

'The poems show a lightness of touch, with an attractive tone and flow...'

Bill Headdon, Links new series 1

'The mood of the work itself is ... in large part reflective and retrospective. There is, as Elizabeth Bartlett says in her back cover endorsement, a hint of mid-life nostalgia which is not overdone, but very potent.'

David Shields, Connections 27

'Page's poetry never strays.  It may leave the path but never for too long.  He touches on the things that pass between men and women ('love's twisted grammar') and refers to his literary icons (Larkin, Plath, Beckett and Yeats) deftly on the way... A collection to be kept on the shelf and returned to when all the lights seem too bright.'

Ian Caws, South 25

'The Alternative Version shuns artifice and contrivance, preferring a directness of language with a genial, compassionate lyricism. This is a very accomplished and satisfying collection.'

John Rice, Kent Arts Now, December/January/February 2001/2002

His short stories have appeared in publications as diverse as Ambit, Citizen 32, The Folkestone Herald and The Interpreter's House.

He has edited and co-edited several anthologies, including Frogmore Poetry (1989, with Antony Powell), Decade (1996, with Kate Pemberton) and Poetry South East 2000. Since 1983 he has been editor of The Frogmore Papers.

Metaphysical

And now I can’t remember if it was Daedalus or
Jennings whose metaphysics led him to
Locate himself with such precision
in his universe: building, road, town,
county, country, continent, hemisphere,
planet, galaxy - a tiny, living pulse against
the enormity of things, a living embodiment
of insignificance, purpose unknown, unless
to show we need no why and no because.
On clear, cold nights, when the stars come out
to play, their indifference convinces me that
I exist no further than the clothes I wear,
the crystal glass I clasp; and that is less than
the deep gold whiskey that scalds my throat.
