“Three were playing here now. Henry was the biggest of them. He was also
a distant relative of that other boy whose mulberry-marked face had not been
seen since the evening of the great fire; but he was not old enough to
understand this, and if he had been told that the other boy had gone home in
an aircraft, he would have accepted the statement without fuss or disbelief.
Henry was a bit of a leader this afternoon, because the other two were
Percival and Johnny, the smallest boys on the island. Percival was
mouse-colored and had not been very attractive even to his mother; Johnny
was well built, with fair hair and a natural belligerence. Just now he was
being obedient because he was interested; and the three children, kneeling
in the sand, were at peace.”

Trei se jucau acum aici. Henry era cel mai mare dintre ei. El era si o ruda indepartata a acelui baiat cu fata patata de dude care nu mai fusese vazut din seara marelui foc dar el nu era suficient de mare ca sa inteleaga acest lucru, si daca lui i s-ar fi spus ca celalalt baiat s-a dus acasa intr-un avion, el ar fi acceptat declaratia fara agitatie si neincredere.
Henry a facut un pic pe seful in aceasta dupa-amiaza, deoarece ceilalti doi erau Percival si Johnny, cei mai mici baieti de pe insula. Percival avea o culoare pamantie si nu a fost prea atragator nici chiar pentru mama sa ; Johnny era bine facut, cu par drept si o beligerenta naturala. Chiar acum el era ascultator pentru ca era interesat ; si cei trei copii, cu genunchii in nisip, erau impacati.
