Behind them the sliver of the moon had risen clear of the horizon. Before them, something like a big ape was sleeping with its head between its knees. Then the wind roared through the forest, there was confusion in the darkness and the creature lifted its head, holding toward them a desintegrated face.
Ralph found himself taking giant leaps among the ashes, heard the others crying out and leaping and dared the impossible climbing down on the dark slope; shortly, the mountain was deserted, only the three abandoned sticks and the creature that was lurching had been left behind.

In spatele lor, felia de luna se ridicase clara la orizont. In fata, un fel de maimuta uriasa dormea cu capul intre genunchi. Apoi vantul mugi prin padure, in bezna se strarni o foiala, iar faptura isi inalta capul, indreptand spre ei o fata descompusa.
Ralph se pomeni alergand cu pasi mari prin cenusa, ii auzi pe ceilalti tipand si sarind si incerca imposibilul, coborand in goana panta intunecata; in curand, muntele se goli, in urma ramanand doar cele trei bete uitate si faptura care se clatina.
