Piggy took off his shoes and socks, ranged them carefully on the ledge, and tested the water with one toe.
"It's hot!"
"What did you expect?"
"I didn't expect nothing. My auntie-"
"Sucks to your auntie!"
Ralph did a surface dive and swam under water with his eyes open; the sandy edge of the pool loomed up like a hillside. He turned over, holding his nose, and a golden light danced and shattered just over his face. Piggy was looking determined and began to take off his shorts. Presently he was palely and fatly naked. He tiptoed down the sandy side of the pool, and sat
there up to his neck in water smiling proudly at Ralph.
"Aren't you going to swim?"
Piggy shook his head.
"I can't swim. I wasn't allowed. My asthma-"

Piggy isi scoase pantofii si sosetele, le aseza cu grija pe margine, si incerca apa cu un deget de la picior.
- E fierbinte!
- La ce te asteptai?
- Nu ma asteptam la nimic. Matusica mea…
- Mai da-o incolo pe matusica ta!
Ralph facu o scufundare si inota pe sub apa cu ochii deschisi; marginea nisipoasa a piscinei se intrevedea ca o coasta de deal. Se intoarse, tinandu-se de nas, in timp ce o lumina aurie dansa raspandindu-i-se pe fata. Piggy arata hotorat si incepu sa-si dea jos pantalonii. Acum era dezbracat si se vedea cat era de alb si de grasut. Merse in varful degetelor pe suprafata nisipoasa a piscinei si se baga in apa pana la gat zambind mandru catre Ralph.
- N-ai de gand sa inoti?
Piggy dadu din cap ca nu.
- Nu stiu sa inot. Nu am avut voie. Astmul meu…
