He jumped down from the terrace. The sand was thick over his black shoes and the heat hit him. He became conscious of the weight of clothes, kicked his shoes off fiercely and ripped off each stocking with its elastic garter in a single movement Then he leapt back on the terrace, pulled off his shirt, and stood there among the skull-like coconuts with green shadows from the palms and the forest sliding over his skin. He undid the snake-clasp of his belt, lugged off his shorts and pants, and stood there
He was old enough, twelve years and a few months, to have lost the prominent tummy of childhood; and not yet old enough for adolescence to have made him awkward. You could see now that he might make a boxer, as far as width and heaviness of shoulders went, but there was a mildness about his mouth and eyes that proclaimed no devil. He patted the palm trunk softly, and, forced at last to believe in the reality of the island, laughed delightedly again and stood on his head. He turned neatly on to his feet, jumped down to the beach, knelt and swept a double armful of sand into a pile against his chest. Then he sat back and looked at the water with bright, excited eyes.

Sari de pe dig. Nisipul era in strat gros peste pantofii sai negri iar caldura il coplesea. Deveni constient de greutatea hainelor sale, isi arunca pantofii cu putere si isi dadu jos pe rand sosetele cu elastic dintr-o singura miscare. Apoi sari de pe dig, isi smulse camasa de pe el si se posterna printre copacii de cocos cu umbre verzi de la frunze si de la padurea ce se reflecta peste pielea lui. Isi desfacu cureaua, isi trase de pe el pantalonii si chilotii, si ramase acolo gol, uitandu-se catre plaja si apa incantatoare.
Era destul de maricel, avea deja 12 ani si cateva luni, ca sa-si fi pierdut deja burtica proeminenta a copilariei dar insa nu suficient de mare pentru adolescenta, care l-ar fi facut sa arate ciudat. Se putea vedea ca ar fi putut fi unui boxer, in ceea ce priveste inaltimea si greutatea umerilor sai, insa exista o dulceata in buzele si in ochii sai care nu anunta nimic demonic in el. Maingaie usor trunchiul copacului, si obligat parca pa sa accepte in cele din urma realitatea existentie insulei, rase din nou plin de incantare si sa puse in cap. Se intoarese usor pe picoarele sale, sari pe plaja, ingenunchea si lua in mana doi pumni de nisip pe care-i puse pe piept. Apoi se aseza si se uita catre apa cu ochii mari, luminosi si plin de entuziasm.
