“Life became a race with the fire and the boys scattered through the upper forest. To keep a clean flag of flame flying on the mountain was the immediate end and no one looked further. Even the smallest boys, unless fruit claimed them, brought little pieces of wood and threw them in. The air moved a little faster and became a light wind, so that leeward and windward side were clearly differentiated. On one side the air was cool, but on the other the fire thrust out a savage arm of heat that crinkled hair on the instant. Boys who felt the evening wind on their damp faces paused to enjoy the freshness of it and then found they were exhausted.“

Viaţa a devenit o goană după foc iar băieţii se împrăştiau prin pădurea de sus. Scopul era de a ţine o flacără arzând ca semn pe munte şi nimeni nu se ocupa de asta. Chiar şi cei mai mici băieţi, dacă nu se ocupau de fructe, aduceau surcele şi aruncau în el. Aerul se înteţea şi devenea o adiere de vânt, astfel încât partea opusă vântului şi partea dinspre care bate vântul se deosebeau limpede. Pe o parte aerul era rece, dar pe cealaltă focul împingea un braţ puternic de căldură care încreţea părul pe loc. Băieţii care simţeau vântul serii pe chipurile lor umede s-au oprit pentru a se bucura de prospeţimea sa şi apoi se simţeau istoviţi.
