Om de apa

De ar fi sa ma mai nasc,
fa ma un om de apa ori unul de metal,
iar nu de foc. De pamant?
Sa ia sfarsit traseele de flacari
ce ma spinteca,
asa cum pana n varf cararea
taie un munte.
Sa fiu o insula n mijlocul marii,
eu, care m am gandit mereu
la singuratatea stancii scaldate de valuri
si care am inteles ca piatra aceea singura
are mai mult curaj decat mine.
Dar, daca trebuie,
fa ma aceasta lava
sau fumul din jurul ei,
poate am sa inteleg mai bine viata.

Man of the Water

If I were to be born again,
Make me a man of water or of metal,
and not of fire.Of clay?
So let there be an end to the traces of flame
which rip me out,
just like the path
which crosses a mountain to its very peak.
I wish I were an island in the middle of the sea,
I,who have always thought
of the loneliness of the cliff splashed by waves
and who have understood that that lonesome cliff
is more daring than me.
But,if it must be so,
make me be this lava
or the smoke around it,
maybe I will understand life better.
