All this time I never thought it was serious. I know that must sound very strange, but it was so. I used to say, of course, I'll never do it, this is only pretending. And I wouldn't have pretended even like that if I hadn't had all the time and money I wanted. In my opinion a lot of people who may seem happy now would do what I did or similar things if they had the money and the time. I mean, to give way to what they pretend now they shouldn't. Power corrupts, a teacher I had always said. And Money is Power.


It was the first time she'd given me a kind look. She was saying, trust me, plain as words. A little smile round her eyes, looking up at me. All eager.

In tot acest timp, n-am crezut niciodata ca era ceva serios. Stiu ca suna foarte ciudat, dar asa a fost. Imi spuneam, desigur, ca n-o sa o fac niciodata, ca doar ma prefaceam. Si nici macar nu m-as fi prefacut asa, daca nu as fi avut tot timpul si banii pe care ii voiam. Dupa parerea mea, multi oameni care par fericiti acum ar face ce am facut eu sau lucruri asemanatoare daca ar avea banii si timpul necesar. Adica, sa cedeze lucrurilor la care ei spun acum ca nu ar trebui sa cedeze. Puterea corupe, spunea mereu cineva care mi-a fost profesor. Si Banii inseamna Putere.
 

Era prima data cand ma privea cu blandete. Imi spunea sa am incredere in ea, de-a dreptul. Un zambet mic de jur imprejurul ochilor ei ma privea de jos plin de nerabdare.
