TRANSILVANIA (I)

IN PEISAJUL spiritului romanesc, Transilvania reprezinta rigoarea. Este ca si cum as spune: in peisajul romanesc Transilvania reprezinta muntii. Munti au si Moldova si Muntenia. Oltenia insasi are munti, dar crestele sunt stranse in jurul Ardealului intr-o afinitate geologica fara inceput.

TRANSYLVANIA (I)

IN THE LANDSCAPE of Romanian spirit, Transylvania means the rigor. It is as if I would say: in the Romanian landscape, Transylvania represents the mountains. Bouth Moldova and Muntenia have mountains as well. Oltenia itself has mountains, but the ridges are gathered around Ardeal in a geological affinity that has no beginning. The mountains belong to Transylvania, because Transylvania is called the rough and hard territory of our souls.
In the space spreading Mures, Tarnave and Cris rivers, in the time elapsed from Gelu to Inochentie Micu and Iancu, the concept of game is uncontained. The moving and bright spirit, so specific to the south, is unwanted and inexistent here, a clumsy, but strong seriousness rules everything, we are closer to the Moon than to the gates of the East. Houses allow walls to surround them and people allow silence to surround them, a silence which is equally hard to break. An almost heavy seriousness and an almost magical stability make up the feeling of permanence, powerful as few peoples know.
Everything is eternal, the word itself is unchangeable and we do not need to wonder that here you can rely on a word as you would in other places in the wall of the rock.
The stability of thoughts and feelings is so strong that the mistake does not fit in the plans. When it appears it can only be catastrophically. Avram Iancu, maddened when realizing that he had been wrong, is terrible and out of place among contemporary barricades.
If ever anyone, a restless and fantastic spirit, would seek to predict the miraculous unity of the Romanian people, would perhaps find them twisted in our spiritual coordinates as well, which are not alike, but link absorb to one another. Muntenia and Moldova spring their exuberance and their dream from the silent Ardeal, because, beyond the tall gates and the silence of creation, Transylvania represents the cradle.
