Gannet

This is what I came to look for
from the rocks at the very tip
of St David’s Head, this bird,
this gannet, so white it reflects the light
from far out on the open sea,
one continuous line of body
aimed towards
the questing head and sharp beak,
its whole being flowing forward
like Braque’s bird, bleached
and flying over the bay,
back to Grassholm.
Suppose I can be re-born
into that frame, what might I find
in the huge plunge seaward,
in the crash of entry, the long
descent to semi-darkness?
What fish emerge with?

Gasca alba

Iata ce am venit sa caut
pe stancile de langa dealul
St. David's Head, pasarea asta,
o gasca atat de alba, incat reflecta
lumina pana in largul marii,
corpul ei ca o linie
in capatul careia se afla
capul atent si ciocul ascutit,
in zborul ei, intregul trup
aduce cu tabloul lui Braque, o pata deschisa
ce zboara deasupra golfului
intorcandu-se la Grasshohn.
Ce-ar fi daca as renaste si m-as intruchipa
sub acea forma, cum ar fi
sa ma avant eu de la asa distanta in apa
sa ma ciocnesc cu apa,
sa ma cufund in semi-intuneric?
Cu ce peste as iesi la suprafata?
